Following his acclaimed works The Story of Southern Islet and Snow in Midsummer, Malaysian director Chong Keat Aun returns with his latest feature, Pavane for an Infant. Set in a quiet corner of Malaysia, the film explores a baby shelter where the raw realities of life intertwine with a touch of magical realism-shedding light on the pain, resilience, and struggles of women navigating a patriarchal and theocratic society.<\/p>\n
Leading the cast are Fish Liew, Natalie Hsu, and Ben Yuen, who immersed themselves in local dialects and cultures to portray their roles with authenticity and nuance. Joining them is celebrated Malaysian actress Pearlly Chua, whose performance adds depth to the film\u2019s powerful exploration of bodily autonomy and feminine agency.<\/p>\n
Pavane for an Infant premiered as the opening film of the Hong Kong International Film Festival and was shortlisted for the “Asian Future” section at the Tokyo International Film Festival. It was also featured at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, and has screened across Switzerland, Germany, and Finland-garnering critical acclaim and resonating with audiences across cultural boundaries.<\/p>\n
Ahead of its Hong Kong release, a new poster was unveiled today. With its rich, moody tones evoking the mystique of Southeast Asia, the image is layered with symbolic details that echo the film\u2019s magical realist spirit. Fish Liew and Natalie Hsu, dressed in traditional Minangkabau attire, appear at the edge of the composition, their expressions contemplative. The water-both a symbol of life and mystery-half-submerges their bodies, while infants, fragile and unheld, drift like petals in a cradle of water, their fates uncertain.<\/p>\n
