In the late 1990s, amid political unrest in Malaysia, Hong Im (Fan Bingbing) — a farmer living in a Chinese–Siamese border village in the north — struggles to endure the grief of losing her husband. She works the fields with her daughter Ah Wen (Natalie Hsu) and son Ah Khun (Bai Runyin), living an austere and humble life.
By day, she farms and fights for neighbours whose land is being seized.
By night, she becomes a ritual healer, helping the village women dispel sickness and misfortune.
As land disputes intensify and strange phenomena begin emerging in the village, the mystery behind her husband’s death resurfaces. With danger approaching, Hong Im is determined to seek release and reconciliation for her children.
And when a missing water buffalo returns, it leads the family toward the long-buried truth…
