♛ A new film by Chong Keat Aun, following Pavane for an Infant, Snow in Midsummer, and The Story of Southern Islet
♛ Winner of three Golden Horse Awards
Set in northern Malaysia in the late 1990s, amid political unrest, farmer Hong Im (Fan Bingbing) lives quietly with her two children after her husband’s death from a mysterious illness. By day, she farms the land and advocates for villagers whose land has been seized; by night, she becomes a sorceress, performing healing rituals and exorcisms for women in her community.
As unresolved colonial-era land treaties resurface, the village is plagued by unsettling phenomena—a wandering monk leading an ox, desecrated ancestral graves, spirit possession, and a creeping curse tied to Hong Im’s past. As fog engulfs the land, the buried wounds of history and displaced souls begin to surface, echoing through the ancient Bujang Valley.
