In the late 1990s, amid political unrest in Malaysia, Hong Im (Fan Bingbing), a farmer living in a Chinese–Siamese border village in the north, struggles to endure the grief of losing her husband while raising her daughter Ah Wen (Natalie Hsu) and son Ah Khun (Bai Runyin) in a quiet, minimalist life.
